The Digital-to-Retail Playbook: A Sourced Guide
This is the long version of our Oct 2025 playbook post [1]. The short version: retail buyers want proof your marketing moves units. Coupons and cashback create that proof. You need it to land authorizations, and you need it more to keep them.
1. Why digital-to-retail exists
Every CPG marketer has been asked to prove offline attribution. The halo from Amazon, Meta and TikTok ads is obvious to us and invisible to the CFO. A digital-to-retail (D2R) funnel is the fix: capture attention on social, deliver instant value with an incentive, capture the shopper's email or phone, then close the loop with redemption tracking. [1]
The buyer's clock makes it urgent. NielsenIQ's BASES work reads launches at week 4, week 8 and week 13, and launches in the top sales quintile by week 4 are 1.7x more likely to grow in year two. [17] The first 90 days in a new retailer are the test; D2R is how you don't leave that test to chance.
2. The funnel, step by step
Step 1. Content with a trigger
A Reel, TikTok or creator post with one job: get the viewer to comment a keyword or DM you. “Comment SODA for $2 off at your grocery store” beats “link in bio” because the DM is where you capture the phone number.
Step 2. DM automation
ManyChat handles the Instagram DM reply, the keyword trigger and lead capture. [1] It asks for the shopper's phone or email and hands them the offer link. Pricing is on ManyChat's own page. [6]
Step 3. The offer (pick one)
- Vizer: single-use, scannable digital offers processed as payments, not coupons or rebates. Distribute through any digital or out-of-home channel with a unique tracking link; track clicks, clips and scans in real time; single-use protections against stacking and duplicate redemptions; works across in-network retailers from one platform. [2]
- Aisle: cashback entirely inside text messages. The shopper signs up with a phone number only, snaps the receipt and texts it; the offer value is paid via PayPal or Venmo within 24–48 hours. Works at any store. Aisle says 600+ brands use it. [3][4]
- Ibotta (scale option): a pay-per-sale network reaching 200 million+ consumers through retailer and publisher apps; brands pay when a campaign results in a sale. Better once you have distribution broad enough to justify it. [5]
Step 4. Owned follow-up
The phone number you just captured is the asset. Put it into SMS and email flows: a welcome text, a “did you find us?” nudge, a reorder reminder. Postscript's 2026 benchmarks across 17,000+ Shopify stores put median revenue per text at $0.98 and welcome-series click rates at 4.65–10.85% (25th–75th percentile). [18]
Step 5. Close the loop
Export redemptions by store and date. Line them up against the retailer's velocity report for the same doors. That one chart is your renewal meeting.
3. What the stack costs (published prices)
| Tool | Published pricing | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Postscript (SMS) | Starter $0/mo with $49 monthly minimum spend, $0.009/SMS and $0.045/MMS plus carrier fees; Growth $100/mo ($0.008/SMS); Professional $500/mo ($0.007/SMS); Enterprise $699/mo | [7] |
| Klaviyo (email + SMS) | Free plan: up to 250 active profiles, 500 email sends/month, $5 of mobile messages/month; paid tiers scale by active profiles | [8] |
| ManyChat (DM automation) | Free and Pro tiers; current prices on the pricing page | [6] |
| Vizer / Aisle / Ibotta (offers) | Quote-based; your real cost is the offer value you fund plus the platform fee | [2][3][5] |
Budget rule from our launches: the offer is the media. Fund the discount first, the ad spend second. An un-incentivized Reel sends a shopper to a shelf they can't find; an incentivized one sends them with a reason to look.
4. Retailer programs built for emerging brands
These are the doors that are actually open. Each links to the retailer's own page; read the requirements before you pitch.
| Program | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Whole Foods Market LEAP | Local and Emerging Accelerator Program, launched 2022, for brands not yet on Whole Foods shelves: six-month program with coaching, education and potential financial support; the Early Growth cohort runs a 12-week curriculum; participants are considered for placement in their home city or region on completion. | [9] |
| H-E-B Quest for Texas Best | H-E-B's annual competition for products made by Texans, with prize money and shelf placement for winners. | [10] |
| Kroger Go Fresh & Local Supplier Accelerator | For Fresh suppliers of every size with a local or regional product; Kroger's stated route for small and diverse U.S. suppliers into its stores. | [11] |
| Walmart Open Call | Walmart and Sam's Club's largest sourcing event: 30-minute one-on-one merchant pitches for products made, grown or assembled in the U.S.; deals range from a few local stores to hundreds, plus Walmart.com and Marketplace. | [14] |
| Target Accelerators | No application; brands fill out Target's Supplier Intake Form and are assessed for programs such as Forward Founders. Free on-demand founder education on the same site. | [15] |
| Sprouts new-item submission | Sprouts requires EFT payments, EDI for POs, invoices and ASNs, and standard Net 30 terms with promotions deducted from open A/P; the buying team meets brands at Expo West each March. | [12][13] |
| RangeMe | The product discovery platform where many retail buyers (and ECRM sessions) source new items; a profile there is table stakes for a cold pitch. | [16] |
5. The retailer pitch, in order
- Proof of velocity from any door you already have: dollars per store per week, promo weeks pulled out. Our benchmarks page shows how to compute it.
- Proof of demand in their trade area: your DTC orders, SMS subscribers or social followers by zip near their stores. This is where D2R data pays off twice.
- The launch plan: the D2R funnel above, dated, with the offer, the creators and the store list. A buyer who sees a 90-day plan sees a brand that will survive week 13. [17]
- Logistics readiness: distributor (or direct), EDI, insurance, Net 30 tolerance, shelf-life and case pack. Sprouts lists its requirements in public; most retailers' lists look similar. [12]
- The ask: how many SKUs, which stores, what intro support you fund.
Everything above is one page in the checklist: download the Retailer Pitch Checklist (PDF).
6. What we have seen go wrong
- Geo-blind spend. Running the same Meta ads nationally while you are in 40 stores in Southern California. Target the doors.
- Offer without capture. A coupon with no phone number attached is a one-time discount, not a funnel.
- Measuring too late. Two-thirds of innovators don't look until week 12 or later. [17] Look at week 4.
- Mistaking distribution for demand. Being in 1,000+ stores, as Perfy is, is the start of the job; getting a shopper to pick you up twice is the job.

FAQ
What is a digital-to-retail (D2R) funnel?
A campaign where social content or ads send shoppers to a store with a trackable incentive (a single-use digital offer or a receipt-based cashback), so you can show a buyer that online spend produced in-store units. The chain is: attention on social, a DM or SMS that captures contact info, an offer, and a redemption you can count.
Vizer or Aisle: which one?
Vizer issues single-use, scannable digital offers processed as payments, with real-time clicks, clips and scans and protections against duplicate redemptions; it works through in-network retailers. Aisle runs cashback entirely over text: the shopper texts a photo of the receipt and is paid via PayPal or Venmo in 24–48 hours, so it works at any store. If your retailer is in Vizer's network, Vizer gives cleaner attribution; if you need any-store coverage, Aisle.
How do I prove the campaign to a buyer?
Bring redemptions by store (or by zip), the redemption rate against offers issued, repeat redemptions, and the before-and-after velocity in the doors you targeted versus doors you didn't. That last comparison is the one buyers believe.
How much does the stack cost to start?
Postscript's Starter plan is $0 per month with a $49 monthly minimum spend at $0.009 per SMS plus carrier fees; Growth is $100 per month and Professional $500 per month. Klaviyo's free plan covers 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month. ManyChat and the offer platforms publish current pricing on their own pages, linked below. Offer costs are your own margin: the discount or cashback you fund plus the platform fee.
Which retailer programs take emerging brands?
Whole Foods' Local and Emerging Accelerator Program (LEAP), H-E-B's Quest for Texas Best, Kroger's Go Fresh & Local Supplier Accelerator, Walmart's Open Call (U.S.-made products, 30-minute merchant pitches), Target Accelerators (via its supplier intake form) and Sprouts' new-item submission. Each is linked on this page with what it asks for.
Can I download the checklist?
Yes. The retailer-pitch checklist is a free one-page PDF, linked at the top and bottom of this page. Use it, share it, and link back to this page if you republish it.
