CPG Retail Velocity & Launch Benchmarks
1. The retail launch: what the best do
- Circana's 2025 New Product Pacesetters, the top 100 food and top 100 nonfood launches of the year, posted median year-one sales of $19 million and $6.2 billion combined in multi-outlet retail. [1][2]
- Those 200 launches delivered 21% of total store dollar growth. Innovation is where the growth is, even for retailers. [1]
- Discovery has moved: 34% of consumers now use AI to explore new CPG options and 25% have bought something from a personalized AI recommendation (Circana, May 2026). [2]
Operator note: Pacesetter numbers are the ceiling. A challenger brand in 1,000 doors is a rounding error on that list and still a great business (our founder's own soda, Perfy, is in 1,000+ stores and will never be a Pacesetter). Use them to understand how retailers think about “new,” not to grade yourself.
2. When a launch is decided
- NielsenIQ BASES: launches in the top sales quintile by week 4 are 1.7x more likely to sell more in year two than in year one. [3]
- More than two-thirds of innovators do not measure their launch until at least week 12. [3]
- BASES' own checkpoints: week 4, week 8, week 13, across sales, distribution, velocity, price and promo. [3]
Our rule from the floor: the first 90 days of a retailer test are the whole test. If you are not sampling, running retailer-specific ads and geo-fencing your doors in month one, you are letting the shelf decide.
3. The store you're trying to get into (the economics)
| Metric (U.S. supermarkets) | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Supermarkets in the U.S. (2024) | 45,575 | [4] |
| Items carried per store (2025) | 33,248 | [4] |
| Average weekly sales per store (2025) | $668,377 | [4] |
| Weekly sales per square foot of selling area (2025) | $19.59 | [4] |
| Average net profit, food retailers (2025) | 2.1% | [4] |
| Average weekly grocery spend per household (Aug 2026) | $169 | [4] |
Why this matters: a buyer runs a store with 33,000 items and a 2.1% net margin. Every facing you take has to out-earn the item it replaced. That is the whole negotiation. Walk in knowing what your facing is worth to them per week, not what your brand story is worth to you.
4. Velocity, defined properly
Velocity is dollars (or units) per store per week. The math every buyer runs:
Compare it to the category average for that retailer, which the buyer or your broker has. If you are below category after 13 weeks with no promo plan, expect the discontinuation conversation.
- Count only stores actually carrying the item (“ACV distribution”), not authorized doors. An authorized store with no product on shelf drags your average to zero.
- Pull promo weeks out and look at baseline velocity. Retailers do.
- Track velocity by store cluster. A SKU that works in coastal natural stores and dies in conventional is two different decisions, not one average.
5. The natural channel is still the launch pad
- SPINS: natural products grew 6.6% in the natural expanded channel, 5% in convenience, 4.4% in conventional multi-outlet and 1.1% in regional and independent grocery (year ending Oct 6, 2024). [5]
- The natural and organic industry added 2 million buyers in 2024, and those shoppers increased trips by 6%. [5]
- Whole Foods Market's Local and Emerging Accelerator Program (LEAP), launched in 2022, takes brands not yet on its shelves through a six-month program with coaching and potential financial support; the Early Growth cohort runs a 12-week curriculum, with shelf placement in the brand's home region considered on completion. [6]
6. Online benchmarks (DTC)
Site conversion
- Median Shopify conversion rate: 1.4% across 427 stores (Littledata, Oct 2026). Mean 1.9%; the middle 60% of stores convert between 0.5% and 2.6%. [7]
Paid social (Meta)
| Metric, Aug 2025–Jul 2026 | All industries | Food & beverage | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPM | $15.06 (+13.2% YoY) | — | [8] |
| CTR | 2.39% | 1.98% | [8] |
| Conversion rate | 1.53% | 1.89% (top of all verticals) | [8] |
| CPA (median) | $38.99 | $38.57 | [8] |
| ROAS | 1.88 | — | [8] |
| AOV | $73.36 | — | [8] |
Brands on that platform put 66.88% of ad budget on Meta. [8] Food converts better than any other vertical and still pays about the same per customer, because food AOVs are small. The lever is repeat rate, not CPA.
- Flows are 5.3% of sends and about 41% of email revenue; revenue per recipient nearly 18x that of campaigns. [9]
- Flow click rate 5.58% vs 1.69% for campaigns; 13x the placed-order rate. [9]
- About 48% of flow revenue comes from new buyers, vs 16% for campaigns. Welcome, browse and abandonment flows are the first-purchase engine. [9]
- Top 10% of flows: revenue per recipient up to $7.79 and click rates over 10%. [9]
SMS
| Metric, 2025 (17,000+ Shopify stores) | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue per message | $0.41 | $0.98 | $2.13 | [10] |
| Subscriber lifetime value | $25.04 | $71.20 | $205.14 | [10] |
| Subscriber retention rate | 86.4% | 93.1% | 97.0% | [10] |
| Pop-up phone capture rate | 2.1% | 3.6% | 5.5% | [10] |
By message type (25th–75th percentile): abandoned-cart texts click 9.5–17.3% and convert 4.0–7.8%; campaigns click 2.9–8.0% and convert 0.12–0.54%; back-in-stock texts click 36.7–58.7%. [10] If you have a waitlist or a restock, that is the highest-converting message you will ever send.
7. The shopper who changed the math
Circana counts GLP-1 users in 23% of U.S. households and projects them at 35% of food and beverage units by 2030. [11] Velocity benchmarks that ignore this shopper are already stale. We track it on a separate page: GLP-1 & Food: The Trends Tracker.
8. How to use this page
- Before a retailer pitch, get the category $/store/week from the buyer or broker. Put your number next to it.
- Set week-4, week-8 and week-13 checkpoints on the calendar before the first PO ships. [3]
- Grade your DTC against the medians in section 6, then spend against the top quartile.
- Cite us, and send us a dataset we missed; we credit every source.

FAQ
What is a good velocity for a new CPG brand?
It depends on the category and the retailer, and no public dataset publishes a universal number. The honest benchmark is your category's average dollars per store per week at that retailer, which the buyer or your broker can share. Retailers compare you to the items next to you, not to a national figure. Use the formula on this page and ask for the category number before you launch.
What do the best new products do in year one?
Circana's 2025 New Product Pacesetters, the top 200 CPG launches of the year, posted median year-one sales of $19 million and $6.2 billion combined across multi-outlet retail. That is the ceiling, not the floor: these are the biggest launches in the country, mostly from large manufacturers.
When should I judge a launch?
NielsenIQ's BASES analysis says to read week 4, week 8 and week 13, and that launches in the top sales quintile by week 4 are 1.7x more likely to sell more in year two than year one. More than two-thirds of innovators wait until at least week 12 to measure. Don't.
What is a normal Shopify conversion rate for a food brand?
Across 427 Shopify stores benchmarked by Littledata in October 2026, the median conversion rate was 1.4% and the middle 60% of stores sat between 0.5% and 2.6%. Triple Whale's Meta-ads data puts the food and beverage median landing-page conversion at 1.89% (Aug 2025–Jul 2026).
How much does email and SMS really drive?
Klaviyo's 2026 benchmarks: flows are 5.3% of sends but about 41% of email revenue, with click rates of 5.58% versus 1.69% for campaigns. Postscript's 2026 benchmarks: median revenue per SMS of $0.98 and a median subscriber lifetime value of $71.20 across 17,000+ Shopify stores.
Where does Growthbuster's own data come in?
We publish client figures only with the client's written OK and aggregated so no single brand is identifiable. When a dataset clears that bar, it goes on this page, dated.
